(Note: this review is for the Chicago-St. Louis stretch of Route 66.)Plusses:*There is a lot in this guide that you won't find elsewhere, particularly notes about newer restaurants and historical sites along the way. I appreciated this after days of greasy food and fiberglass statues (both of which are excellent, but I do like variety).*I found the turn-by-turn driving directions in this book to be the easiest to follow out of the four total sources I used.Minuses:*The book is missing some classic sites, like Dead Man's Curve and the Pig-Hip memorial, among others. I was able to make these stops thanks to other books. I know that it's a lot to expect any book to cover everything, but these stops seem to be considered Route 66 essentials.*My copy started falling apart on day 2. This is especially annoying when you're in a car and attempting to use the book as your primary guide.Neutral:*Even though this edition came out only a month and a half ago, it's already out of date. I don't know when the book came out of editing; I know it's not fair to be annoyed that they didn't know the Launching Pad is open again, as it only opened in May of this year, but the Art's Motel sign has been gone since last summer, and it seems like the author should've been on top of that.Ultimately I used this book as our primary guide until the pages started falling out. I would have given it four stars but having to keep track of loose pages in a car was enough of an annoyance that I dropped it to three. I definitely recommend the book but wow, having the book fall apart in my hands as I was attempting to use it as a tool was (is!) frustrating. My husband and I drove Route 66 in it's entirety from Chicago to Santa Monica Pier, October 2019. We drove his Porsche Boxster and had a fantastic time. This guide helped us plan and execute our trip with few areas along the route unconquered. It was important to us to stay on the oldest route drivable and 90 plus % we were on a 2 lane road. Jessica Dunham did her research. In detail. Our guidebook is a mess but I'm so proud that it is. We USED it. All day long. Every day of our trip. It helped me gauge how many days it would take to not only complete the trip but how many days we might like to stay in certain cities or along certain sections of the road. The 2019 edition maps and written directions in and out of towns and along the way were spot on. We loved the Highlights itemized for each State and we did our best to see each one. My daily journal is written in the margins and we can synchronize our photos with our journal and guide easily. THANK YOU Jessica!! Clearly we wouldn't have had a meaningful trip enjoying so much Americana without your guide.
