Ebook About
This gripping and triumphant memoir from the author of The Mountain follows a living legend of extreme mountaineering as he makes his assault on history, one 8,000-meter summit at a time. For eighteen years Ed Viesturs pursued climbing’s holy grail: to stand atop the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, without the aid of bottled oxygen. But No Shortcuts to the Top is as much about the man who would become the first American to achieve that goal as it is about his stunning quest. As Viesturs recounts the stories of his most harrowing climbs, he reveals a man torn between the flat, safe world he and his loved ones share and the majestic and deadly places where only he can go.A preternaturally cautious climber who once turned back 300 feet from the top of Everest but who would not shrink from a peak (Annapurna) known to claim the life of one climber for every two who reached its summit, Viesturs lives by an unyielding motto, “Reaching the summit is optional. Getting down is mandatory.” It is with this philosophy that he vividly describes fatal errors in judgment made by his fellow climbers as well as a few of his own close calls and gallant rescues. And, for the first time, he details his own pivotal and heroic role in the 1996 Everest disaster made famous in Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air. In addition to the raw excitement of Viesturs’s odyssey, No Shortcuts to the Top is leavened with many funny moments revealing the camaraderie between climbers. It is more than the first full account of one of the staggering accomplishments of our time; it is a portrait of a brave and devoted family man and his beliefs that shaped this most perilous and magnificent pursuit.

Book No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks Review :

I have read many mountaineering books, and generally am so enamored with the subject matter that I am more than happy to deal with poor writing or a jumbled structure. But this book has issues well beyond those alone, and I'd recommend giving it a pass.To be clear, Viesturs is obviously a terrific mountaineer, what he's achieved on the 8000ers is incredible and his careful and cautious approach is very admirable where so many of his contemporaries seem to die so needlessly young in avoidable accidents. But, this book hardly makes you feel like you're along for the ride on his climbs, and with the exception of a few moments on Everest, K2, and Annapurna it's much more a collection of self-aggrandizing and poorly connected anecdotes that jump around between topics and time periods. That's a real shame because his few moments of actually writing about time on the mountains -- and particularly his description of JC Lafaille's ascent of Annapurna -- are compelling and fun. But, far too much time is spent digressing into settling small and petty scores with other mountaineers, journalists and the like who have criticized or questioned him at some point. Moreover, given that Viesturs obviously revels in talking at length about his thoughts on any number of random topics, his discussion about the risks inherent in climbing mountains at the end of the books is surprisingly thin and unoriginal. For someone who obviously loves his family -and yet has left them multiple times even when the kids were very young to climb dangerous mountains- you'd think there would be a more nuanced and interesting discussion about the risks and sacrifices of climbing and the hard choices it entails. All of that is missing. Rather, in poorly written prose, the book instead talks at length about Viesturs corporate talks, sponsors, and other activities that I had little to no interest in.In sum, this is a quick read with a few good moments. But, the classics in this field like books by Tasker, Bordman, Bonatti and Krakauer, combine gripping accounts of climbs with a proper narrative structure, humility, and wit. This book alas has none of that.
Enjoyed Ed Viesturs "No Shortcuts to the Top"I recently heard Ed speak at a Tugboat Institute conference and was inspired by his humility and story to climb all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters without supplemental oxygen. An incredibly motivational story with terrific lessons of teamwork, goal-setting, leadership, risk management and perseverance.Ed's book isn't simply a chronology and recap of his Endeavor8,000 journey. Instead, it is a series of self-reflections about his mindset, balancing priorities, interdependency and interactions with those around him, the challenges of team and climb leadership as well as the physical difficulties and dangers of life above 25,000 feet.If you enjoy true stories of heroes and perseverance, I think you would enjoy "No Shortcuts to the Top". Check it out.
